1,000 True Fans - an essay from 2008 which I strongly stand by: speaking specifically and genuinely to a few makes for long-term survival, and this takes time, patience, and sacrifice-of-scale. But quality over quantity — connection over fad — is far more satiating and feasible as a creator/creative, and realistic.

"Colds and Their Benefits" by Haruchika Noguchi - Noguchi was one of the pioneers of Seitai, a form of bodywork that believes by restoring order to the body, one’s sensitivity and ability to self-regulate or rebalance can be restored as well. Relevant reading for the season.
The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge - something truly lost in this day is pure leisure and hobbies. Doing the non-sensical or aimless. The imperative to justify, align, and constantly do everything has left little room for exploration and chance. To have the security, flexibility, and confidence to do nothing or pursuit something out of pure pleasure is very elite in a world where everyone has a side hustle and thinks in terms of growth and scale. In the fashion and home space, leisure or “unproductive” activities are often utilized to signify aspiration (think Supreme’s random objects, Hermès special projects, or ALD’s use of newspapers and other “leisure” objects to convey a sense of “cool). To attain the breeze of non-hustle is the goal. It’s not effortless: it’s pure enjoyment. Effort is spend, but without a goal. To take time on one’s own terms, to spend one’s efforts without external press and urgency. That’s what the creative world lacks right now, what is elite. But is also so crucial for newness to come. Fearing something like AI always feels overblown because you can’t program the wandering human eye and mind, its randomness, whether in though process, connection, or literally being able to exist, if we’re thinking through a quantum physics lens. Useless knowledge may be the most important knowledge in this moment.
